Note: I do not have the roster for Charlottesville’s volleyball team….yet. So, unfortunately, there will be very few names in this recap. My apologies.

CHARLOTTESVILLE– There is no doubt, Charlottesville’s volleyball program is in a rebuilding state. Coming off of a 0-9 season last year, the Black Knights hoped to rebound with many returners and new players as well on this season’s roster. Out of the many opponents CHS had trouble with last year, STAB was one of them. The Saints beat the Black Knights 3 match wins to zero. This year the Knights were ready. They weren’t going to let that happen again.

The JV teams had just played, STAB earning a tough victory over a skilled Black Knights squad, made up of mostly 8th graders and freshmen who just started school two days ago. The Saints, however, won the first and third matches, winning the best-of-three series 2-1.

The first match between the Varsity teams was intense. STAb jumped to a meaningless 3-1 lead in the beginning, but the Knights woke up, eventually going on a 5-0 run, giving them the 8-4 lead, but STAB wasn’t giving up. After a STAB comeback, the game seesawed, with each team gaining weak 2 point leads. Finally, the score 21-21, the Saints went on a 4-0 spurt, winning the first match 25-21.

The second match was much like the first. The game was close form beginning to end, but, like the first, the Saints had the big plays late, winning the second match, 25-20.

At this point, the Knights were desperate, they needed a win. They got one. The third match was nothing but Black Knights. CHS jumped to an early 10-3 lead and never looked back. The final was 25-16, CHS.

The fourth match, the Saints regrouped. They weren’t about to lose another match, and they played very much like CHS did in the third match, jumping to an early lead and never looking back, winning 25-11.

The fifth and final match was not needed, the Saints already won the scrimmage, 3-1. Still, due to scrimmage rules, the teams had to play the fifth match. The Black Knights played very well, and eventually won the unimportant match.

CHS might have lost the scrimmage, but they look much better than last year, and there are high hopes for this Black Knight team.

Charlottesville will play at Covenant at 5:30 tomorrow. The regular season starts for the Black Knights at EC Glass High School (Lynchburg) on Tuesday, August 25th, at 6:45pm.
